Overhead Compartment is a quarterly publication in print dedicated to interfacing philosophy
and design as an exploration of material culture.

Focused at a readership beyond the confines of academic scholarship,
our task is to bring vision, reflection, and insight to the banal and the everyday, to both natural and built environments. This task is informed by a general phenomenological approach, employing a variety of textual and visual qualitative methods. Each issue focuses on a theme exhibited through different research contexts, such as:

materiality, art, design, architecture, spatiality, craft, sense of place, dwelling, technology, food, advertising, media, mass culture, landscapes, traveling, and storytelling.

We are asking for submissions that are not afraid to get wet, that challenge the depths of water and different encounters therein.

Shifting Contents:Water

Water is marked by a perpetual changing and cycling of form and matter, resisting determinacy and yet maintaining constancy. In its circuitous journey to the lowest places, it traverses complex systems, crosses boundaries, and soaks through membranes. Bodies are waterlogged in a world that is equally waterlogged. We are asking for submissions that are not afraid to get wet, that challenge the depths of water and different encounters therein.

Text Submissions

We prefer brief, creative, and effective writing. We are looking for essays and prose of varying length and style, but submissions should not exceed 2500 words and should be formatted as .rtf documents. Formatting and footnotes must comply with the University of Chicago Press Manual of Style. Include your name and institutional or organizational affiliation (if any) on a cover page.

Visual Submissions

We are looking for work with a fresh perspective that is bold, both visually and in terms of concept. All artwork must be submitted either as high resolution (at least 300dpi) .jpg or .tiff files, or in an outlined vector format such as .pdf or .eps. Please include your full name, location and the title of the piece along with your submission.
